Perris’ American Legion Post 595 isn’t immune from the slumping economy.

The post, home to military veterans from World War II to the present Global War on Terror, finds itself struggling to pay its bills, the result of fewer residents taking advantage of the breakfasts, lunches and dinners offered on an almost daily basis.

The bottom line is that Post 595 finds itself about $8,000 in debt, said Commander Bernie Foley.

To help ease the crunch, post officials are selling tickets for a drawing to win a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu which was donated by a member from Sun City. The car is in pristine shape, has just 25,000 miles and comes equipped with cruise control, power doors and windows and air conditioning. Tickets are $100 apiece and the post has set a goal of selling 100 prior to the drawing, set for April 10.

The Blue Book value of the car is $8,000.
“It’s a real gem,” Foley said. “We’re lucky to have it. It’s a great gift to the post and we think it’s a great opportunity for someone to win a terrific car for just $100.”

Foley, a Korean War veteran, said the American Legion post is suffering from reduced business because “people are just not spending money like they used to.” Revenue from meals served by post members that formerly provided a steady source of income, have dropped off significantly, Foley said.

“We’re barely making expenses,” he said. “The economy is just killing us.”

Foley said that people who want more information about the drawing should call him at 951-377-2718 or the American Legion Post at 951-657-6275.
