Perris Planning and Public Safety commissioners were sworn in this week during a regular meeting of the Perris City Council.

The City also said goodbye to one long-time Public Safety Commissioner, who left his position after 13 years in the job.

City Clerk Judy Haughney administered the oath of office to Shawn Haughney, Joseph Dapice, Robert Hayes, all incumbent commissioners, and new commissioner Jennifer Bieger. All were appointed by the City Council last month to four-year terms that will expire in 2013. The seven-member Public Safety Commission also includes Michael Weir, Robert Turner and Michael Vargas, whose terms expire in 2011.

Haughney and fellow incumbent Commissioner Dwayne Hammond took the oath along with newly appointed Brady McCarron. Incumbent Commissioner Sal Mancuso did not attend the City Council meeting and will be sworn in at a later date.

Planning Commissioners Dave Stuart, Matthew Buck and Henry Martin are serving until 2011.

Planning Commissioners review proposed commercial and residential developments at the request of the City Council.

The Public Safety Commission keeps abreast of law-enforcement matters and serves as a conduit between police, the public and the City Council. Some Public Safety Commissioners also volunteer on the Perris Citizens Patrol, which performs a myriad of duties in support of local police.

Mayor Daryl Busch read a proclamation in praise of outgoing Public Safety Commissioner Michael McAleavy, who stepped down this month after 13 years on the commission.  McAleavy was an original member of the Citizens Patrol when it was formed in 1997.

Busch praised McAleavy for working to “ensure that residents and individuals patronizing business within the City of Perris are afforded the highest public safety standards available” and forging cooperative relationships with law enforcement, fire and emergency service representatives.
McAleavy said he enjoyed every minute of his service to the City.

“Thank you for allowing me to serve you,” he told the City Council. “It’s been a great ride. Now it’s time for someone else to take over.”
