Perris Publishes Updated High Fire Severity Zone Map

PERRIS, Calif. (March 27, 2025) – The City of Perris has announced the release of an updated High Fire Severity Zone (HFSZ) map. This revised map, provided by Cal Fire, is now available for public review and comment. Residents are encouraged to examine the new map to understand potential fire risks in their area. The city is collecting feedback on the updated map following its release. Following significant destructive fires, the need to identify high-risk areas became apparent. Fire Hazard Severity Zone (FHSZ) maps are created to identify risk areas as a crucial first step in developing other mitigation strategies.

The State Fire Marshal is required to categorize lands within State Responsibility Areas (SRA) into FHSZs. These zones are classified as Moderate, High, or Very High, indicating varying levels of fire risk with the intention of informing and educating the public.

Perris, located in Riverside County, is situated about 70 miles southeast of Los Angeles. Demographically, it's a rapidly growing city with a population nearing 80,000, and it is known for its diverse community. Geographically, Perris covers roughly 31 square miles and features a mix of urban development and open spaces, including the notable Lake Perris, and Railway Museum.
