The City of Perris will review Cal Fire's map and adopt the designated zones as part of its public safety efforts. While the city cannot downgrade the severity zones identified by CalFire, the city can upgrade severity classifications based on local conditions and risk assessments.

As part of this process:

• Public Review & Comment: 

  The city will distribute the map for public comments after its release date. For public comments click here.

• Ordinance Adoption: The City must adopt a finalized map and ordinance within 120 days of receiving the map.

• Submission to CalFire: After adoption, the City has 30 days to submit the ordinance to CalFire.

• Very High FHSZ properties must follow stricter home hardening and defensible space standards.
  
  
• 100-foot defensible space clearance is required.
  
  
• New construction & major renovations in High/Very High zones must meet Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) building codes.


• Owners to disclose FHSZ designation when selling property.

The City of Perris is working to:

• Evaluate Local Risk: Determine if any additional areas in Perris should be upgraded to a higher wildfire risk classification based on an assessment of local conditions.
• Inform the Public: Information will be shared with the public through the city website and other means of available communication.
• Develop an Ordinance: Create an ordinance that prioritizes public safety and information and maintains the city’s compliance with state, and federal, regulations.
