What is SB 1383?

In an attempt to reduce methane emissions and other short-lived climate pollutants, the State of California passed Senate Bill (SB) 1383, which set targets that must be achieved by 2025, including:

  • 75% less organic waste sent to our state’s landfills
  • 20% of unsold, edible food recovered is sent to food recovery organizations for human consumption.

Organic waste in landfills emit:

  • 20% of the State’s methane, a climate super pollutant that heats 84 times more than carbon dioxide
  • Air pollutants like PM 2.5, which contributes to health conditions including asthma

Organic waste like food scraps, yard trimmings, and paper make up half of what Californians dump in the trash and ends up in landfills.

Reducing the emissions of these short-lived climate pollutants can have the fastest impact on the climate, which is the reason for SB 1383.
