In 2016, the Aetna Foundation, the American Public Health Association and the National Association of Counties partnered to create the Healthiest Cities & Counties Challenge. As one of the 50 finalists in the challenge, the City of Perris received a $10,000 grant to continue on to the HealthyCommunity50 Challenge, competing to win the $250,000 grand prize.

The goal of the challenge is to to encourage small to mid-size U.S. cities and counties to create a positive health impact. The City of Perris has committed to partner with community, faith-based and school groups to create 31 sustainable and edible urban community gardens throughout the City. These gardens will provide a source of fresh fruit and vegetables in disadvantaged neighborhoods with little access to such healthy choices. The 31-garden project, consisting of Grow Perris, five community satellite hub sites, and 25 neighborhood sites, will endeavor to ensure that all Perris residents can obtain fresh fruits and vegetables within a half-mile of their homes.

The Grow Perris program community garden will serve as a model to encourage residents to grow their own community gardens.

The City of Perris has until September 2018 to complete the challenge.
